In case you've been living under a rock and haven't already seen/downloaded Over The Garden Wall, CN is airing the series for a second time in it's entirety today at 5:30.
It's a fun and spooky ride, so hold on to your butts. Spoiler tag at your own discretion.

With the big role the lantern plays in this show, which corps would the characters belong to?
Beast = Sinestro Corps
Greg = Blue
Quincy = Orange
Beatrice says Wirt has no willpower, but he does overcome great fear, so I feel like that's a toss up for green.

Real spoilers ahead, proceed at your own risk.
Something I noticed on my second watch through with a friend who hasn't seen it.
When they're in the graveyard in episode 9, the only gravestone that actually has a legible name on it is Quincy Endicott, it's the one Greg was hiding behind. And then at the end of the series when they're going back over everyone's lives in the Unknown, you don't see Quincy, you only see the Lady looking at a portrait of him.
This led us to believe that Quincy died shortly after the events.

I always get a laugh out of that bit at the end where Auntie Whispers warns them about Adelaide, and Wirt's giving that look of "Yeah, we already went through all of that, she's dead". Like playing missions in an RPG out of sequential order and getting hints about a mission you've already completed.

 I think that the turtles are agents of the beast. They act as his spies and can contaminate other living things when consumed as a whole. This is why the monster that Beatrice's dog turns into shares the same color eyes as The Beast. This is also why Auntie whispers only side effect is the staining in her mouth (she sucked the turtles out of their shells). Her being a witch could also help. On top of that, whenever the boys are close to turtles, the beast is shown to be following them.

Secondary explanation is that it's a fae realm deal, a place where time isn't entirely linear, and you might cross paths with someone who comes from your far past or future.
Both have holes, and neither fully explains everything the brothers encounter.

You also need to eat, sleep, etc.
If it was purgatory, you'd need to do none of those things, as you'd already be dead.

>>68448691I think people who take the Unknown as purgatory, hell, heaven, the afterlife, or anything like that are completely missing the simple truth contained in its name: It's Unknown, as in no one fucking knows. It's just elsewhere, an unnamed place. Possibly magical, possibly real, possibly in our world, possibly not. It never explains itself and it never needs to, since that's not the point. It doesn't matter where or when they are, just that they are, period.

>>68448750Of course the Unknown is real. If it wasn't, then it'd be a shaggy dog story and that clearly wasn't the case as the people in the unknown continued to have lives after the boys left.
I imagine the Unknown to be a place like Wonderland or Oz, though more accessible than either of them as there has clearly been immigration from the real world.
Or maybe the Unknown is easily accessed in some other universe, but difficult from our own.

>>68448957"Prior to the late 19th century, night air was considered dangerous in most Western cultures. Based on âzymoticâ theory, people believed vapors called âmiasmaâ (plural "miasmata") rose from the soil and spread diseases. Miasmata came from rotting vegetation and foul waterâespecially in swamps and urban ghettos.
Many people, especially the weak or infirm, avoided breathing night air by going indoors and keeping windows and doors shut.
In addition to ideas associated with zymotic theory, there was also a general fear that cold or cool air spread disease.
The fear of night air gradually disappeared as understanding about disease increased as well as with improvements in home heating and ventilation.
Particularly important was the understanding that the agent spreading malaria was the mosquitoes (active at night) rather than miasmata."

>>68449083>Particularly important was the understanding that the agent spreading malaria was the mosquitoes (active at night) rather than miasmata.Pretty wild how the act of staying indoors and shutting windows and doors actually had truth to it since it probably kept most mosquitoes out after all. This is why fairy tales have always been part of folklore across most civilizations - they are truth taken to a fantastical degree. Gossip, wife's tales, fairy tales, they all have a basis in truth pushed too far. The truth is grounding, the fantasy is compelling. That's why they resonate so intimately.

>>68449208They are a explanation for science.
People insist on things having a REASON, but all observation actually gives us is a relationship.
Something is observed to be so...but no one cares, no one bothers to remember...because no one understands WHY.
Someone makes up a compelling reason WHY something is so, and people remember, people take heed...and the story takes on a life of it's own, maybe even eclipsing and drowning out the real reason, when it becomes known.
People call these things Truths as well.
Can we trust that it really is mosquitoes? Maybe that is just another compelling story explaining a mysterious fact...

There is no source for malaria other than parasites in mosquitoes, so any attempt to falsify that theory would fail.

>>68449574I get what you mean.
"Science presents falsifiable ideas and then examines existing evidence to test those ideas."
What I meant was that science presents observed relationships ("m^1 m^ 2/D"), while what people ask for is a "reason why"("because Rabbit stole the Sun").

>>68449655The reason you're getting different answers than you expected is because those tropes have been present in faerie tales in some form or other for a very, very long time. The execution may have a modern twist, but the "rules" of Faerie are the same as they've ever been.

in the end a theory is the same thing as a myth, something that explains something else.. a lie can explain things just as well as the truth, until you manage to poke a hole in it.

>>68450631>in the end a theory is the same thing as a mythNot a scientific theory, though. Myths aren't generally tested and tested to be true since a myth is widely someone one accepts as presented and extrapolates from there instead of trying to investigate and discover the truth behind it.
Now, if you're just talking about a plain old theory like, for example, I came up with the theory you're all the same person trying to trick me into believing I'm on a board with a multitude of people and you're really just an shady government operative trying to figure out what potentially anti-government opinions I may hold so you could make me vanish in the night, now that would be the same as a myth.

>>68450756you can't test a theory, you can only test a hypothesis. a hypothesis is what, but a theory is always 'why'. an inherently imaginary concept.. there's no difference.
if you could test a theory, you would. instead you have to sit around til you find something that disproves it, because a theory is always an assertion of fact, so it's something disprovable. as is any myth.

Which means she became part of the Beast, which is why the Beast has faces all over, he's a conglomeration of all the lost souls that were turned into trees. So when the lantern was blown out and the Beast destroyed all those lost souls returned. Which makes the Woodsmen even more tragic, he could have saved his daughter at any time.
